What’s going on now?

December 17th, 2009 by Jonathan Leave a reply »

First day back at home and Pam wants me to  not freak out at my remaining issues.

The biggest of all is NO feeling in my left right (oops!) hand. I can type cause I’m watching my fingers but my gold feedback test is putting a quarter, dime, penny, and a poker chip in my pants pocket to see if I can pull out a desired combination at will. My status as of today (12/17) is that I feel no end to the pocket’s fabric much less any of the objects in the pocket.

Trying new things today to jump start my “mouse-hand” like holding an off-balanced weighted electric motor (will find something in the shed) or dunking my hand in alternating hot/cold water. I will be carefull.  ALL YOUR CREATIVE SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!

    Pam’s updates have been extremely informative and much appreciated. However, this is the update I’ve been waiting for!

    Welcome back, Jonathan! I can tell from your post that you are going to be fine. Try to relax and enjoy being your own study as your brain continues to heal. Don’t forget: Hypothesize, Experiment, Evaluate and, most importantly, Document!

    Answering your challenge, I offer the following experiment suggestion:

    Preparation (please have an adult supervise you):
    ====================================
    1 – Cut one dozen small trapezoids from card stock with the exact same dimensions as a utility razor blade.
    2 – Place the dozen cutouts in a pile with actual utility razor blades.

    Exercise:
    ====================================
    The objective of the exercise is to separate the paper trapezoids from the metallic trapezoids whilst blind-folded. After some time you may begin to feel sleepy. Push through it!

    Seriously, though. Thanks for your post and welcome home!

    Jonathan, you’re walking, talking AND blogging less than a week after brain surgery. You are amazing! The rest of it will come. That’s one heck of an insult your brain took– I know it’s maddening and worrisome, but try to have a little patience with yourself. Rest and enjoy your wonderful family and the holidays. :-)

    Jonathan,
    I believe that numbness is not an unusual symptom after surgery (and not just neurological) and suspect that feeling will begin to return as you heal. But have you ever thought of acupuncture, which is sometimes used to treat/cure numbness?

    Your message was great to read. You obviously have it together. Rest up!

    Best, Ron

    get drunk and make some paper origami? if that doesn’t work, then plenty of rest. :)

    Now’s the time your hand can get away with anything without being blamed for it. I’m just sayin’.

    Okay, perhaps not the best advice. You didn’t hear it from me. ;)

    Glad you’re back!
